Unfortunately, a studio that offered $50 views would still have to compete with free services. So let's help them compete by offering cool stuff on top of the free services and monetizing the usage like broadcasters. Well, broadcasters that actually care about their audience enough to cherry-pick relevant ads and do not interrupt.

the free services aren't easy to use. most people can't figure out bit torrent without having it explained to them. and then you have to install various codecs to get the stuff to play right. and it costs $500 to put a mac mini in my home entertainment system.
i think the studios could come up with a compelling offer that could compete with "free"

I wish the studios would get out of their own way and compete. I suggest aggregating content from all free services and allowing users to encounter it in their favorite social and search activities...measure, monetize, lather, rinse, repeat.
