Well obviously I agree but we sold 10th street because it was way too much and we aren't living in the entire bldg on 12th. Its an apt bldg

But still Versailles is like five orders of magnitude bigger than either of those

When is enough enough?

I don't know if I agree with your premise. I've been by your former home in the West Village and seen pics of the one you're building on 12th Street. By Columbus, Ohio standards, both are quite opulent and luxurious. My take is, you've worked hard, made smart investments, and reaped the fruit of your labors. Knock yourself out. Now, since they were living in Versailles on the government (read:people's) dime I find that problematic but if a person works hard and wants to live large; more power to them.

A good point. How would you compare it to the White House? (Keeping the analogies, it's one of the modern equivalents.)

I'm thinking, how does the luxury 18th century monarchs lived in compares to the luxury contemporary billionaires live in, like Gates, Brin or Page?

yes, that's what my daughter and emily talked about. we were disturbed by the opulence but thankful that it still exists.

I had the same reaction when I visited the Vatican after graduating college. That so much could be concentrated in one place when at the time the art and wealth was being produced there was near universal suffering and abject poverty was very distressing for me. The only consolation was that so much beauty was created and preserved for future generations to marvel at.

I believe that's why the French monarchy was thrown out...Now, it's a beautiful public place that is open to all. I don't find it upsetting, but a tranquil reminder that the people will throw out the government when it goes to far.
