A VC: Thoughts On Sydney On The Plane To Melbourne

  • schoeny · 2 years ago
Been reading your traveling posts and bringing back some great Sydney memories. That is too bad everything was closed. On a normal weekend the city is unreal. On new years the place is going to erupt for the celebration they call "field day" which is basically one giant outdoor new years eve party with thousands of crazy people

Second the Blue Mountains. Well worth getting out of the city for a bit. Also, head north to Newcastle. It's a small Aussie town but the beaches are not nearly as crowded.

If I can pull it off, I will be spending a few months on Nelson Bay....absolutely beautiful place.

Next time you're in Australia, try to catch and Aussie Rules Football match. They're fun to watch, and even better to see in person (the crowd adds a whole new element to the experience). Back when I lived there my team was the St. Kilda Saints: http://saints.com.au/

Sydney is a great city, has great people and the fact that you can be downtown, go to the Quay, jump a ferry and be sitting on the beach in just a few minutes is awesome. I liked Melbourne as well, another nice city. If you have the time (and a car) I'd recommend driving down the coast to see the 12 Apostles. Also, Bells Beach, cool surfer town is on the way and it's a lovely drive. You just need to keep an eye out for kangaroos.

I have so many things on my list to do for my next trip to Australia, I'd love to spend some time in the bush, take a ride on the Indian Pacific cross country to Perth, see the Blue Mountains and visit Tasmania.

Also, make sure next time you go Australia that you plan a stop in New Zealand, it's a magical place, just wish it wasn't so far away from NYC.

Glad you're getting to enjoy the Aussie summer. Last time I was in Melbourne though there was an awful heatwave, hopefully the weather will be a bit more normal for you.

And having done the reef I know you'll have a good time there!

I'm a frequent reader of your blog and live in Sydney, usually. Alas, the one time you come the long way over to the other end of the world, I happen to be spending with relatives in Germany! Next time you come, I'll show you all the secret awesome locations in Sydney, both from a Nature's point-of-view, but also from getting-to-know the locals. I've lived here for 9 years now and it simply doesn't get boring. I go to work by ferry through the most beautiful harbour on the planet with the most wonderful weather. You happen to have picked the first year in 10 years where summer is dominated by rain! What a shame!
