howard, you obviously didnt read the rules and I'm not sure if thats going to bode well with your chances of getting the position. but i hear there might be an opening over at Knights Bridge. :)
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
Howard doesn't follow rules, he makes them!
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    You're hired Howard!

We shamelessly ripped this idea off when hiring MyBlogLog's community manager and it worked well.

    BTW, what's next for Andrew?
  • Josh · 1 year ago
I'd like to follow the instructions - leaving my contact info in the comments section of the blog post - but I fear that may leave me open to being found out by my current coworkers/bosses. So, would it be possible to email you (or anyone else at USV) with links to my web presence?
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
We'll discuss and get back to you on this.

In the meantime, send me an email so we can do that directly

My email address is on the left sidebar of this blog, most of the way down

Translation: Fred, will you consider hiring someone with no cahones?
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
we will take that matter under consideration. there are extenuating circumstances, but we do prefer people who can "out themselves"

  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    Andrew is sticking around, thankfully
  • jake · 1 year ago
i think it would be more fun if you only considered people blogging in short form: twitter or tumblr streams only.
  • Chris Hamoen · 1 year ago
What a great way to hire someone!

Some of the comments are pretty funny - I won't name any in particular.. But I can imagine that it's fun to peruse the responses!
  • Andy Swan · 1 year ago
Let's put this on Digg so that the world can vote up/down the candidates....
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    Very funny Andy!
  • howardlindzon · 1 year ago
i accept and am standing downstairs. i am the guy with a pipe.
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
Good, I always did like the smell of pipe smoke in the office!

A web presence? What if someone sent you a killer resume instead, and a link to their Facebook profile?

Maybe it's just the soy vanilla tripple latte talking, but I feel like having a web presence is so old-school.

Just like a funded business having an actual website is old-school. (Cough, cough)
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
A facebook profile and a resume tell us nothing about their understanding and use of the web.

A blog, a project they did, or something of that ilk is so much more helpful

My guess is the successful candidate will have both of those in addition to a robust web presence.
  • Andrew_Meyer · 1 year ago
Fred, this a great way for other firms to snipe your potential analysts. :)
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
That's fine. We do the same thing with potential investments. We think we can win the ones we want to win and the rest will go to others with similar taste

    Fred
  • Andrew_Meyer · 1 year ago
I'm sure you'll have no problem winning the ones you want.

Amazing number of responses... but not so many ladies...
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    Good point

    What did we do wrong?

I didn't realize there was a response until I googled my name and found on disqus a reference guide to my blog posts. Very cool.

    Well let's see.

You post the job on your blog and on the Union Square Ventures blog, which limits you to those people who follow those two blogs. My guess is this demographic is heavily skewed towards men. Then you require that those people in order to apply to have a web presence, very limiting. So I guess the question should be how can you attract more female members to your online community?

What has been your strategy in the past for acquiring community members? Personally, I was referred to it. I think this definitely an interesting question.

We purposely limited the search to people who follow our blogs. We think
that's a great pre-screen for the kind of people we want to hire. They know
about our firm and follow what we do.

We've got a number of good female candidates including one we've interviewed
    already and really like.

I agree its a great pre-screen and rewards your loyal followers which is cool. I am glad you have some good female candidates.

Looks like the other site has gone down...
  • Ashish · 1 year ago
So if one does have a web project, but would consider other (*cough*) stable alternatives, you wouldn't hold it against them, would you?
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    Not at all
  • gabe · 1 year ago
wow, you posted your wanted ad at 9:31 and in 3 hours you got what 16-17 qualified applications? i smell a bubble here...
  • Pete · 1 year ago
I've already piloted something that is (or will be) better than outside.in. Not sure if it is will make me any money but I am thinking about open sourcing it.

    We can talk....

I'm not familiar with your political leanings. I want to start a political blog myself, but possibly it's a good idea g to go with others, such as yourselves..

i don' t have any idea what an "analyst " does - analyzes, of course, buy in what context. If you'd like to plain what you'd like to have ,please email me And whether or not you'd like an additional blogger at specified intervals or on specific area coverage.
